NETWORKING

People who have succeeded in the entertainment industry attribute different things in their success, one of which is often luck.

"Luck is where preparation meets opportunity."

When you learn how to market yourself, you create your own luck. Sitting at home hoping someone will call you for your services is a risky move and 99 times out of 100 the phone won't ring.  You have to get your name out there.  Meet people.  Let them know what you are offering.

Step one is to research.  A great way to begin the marketing process is to see how other artists in your area are getting their name out there. Are they advertising?  Are they attending events?  From there you can incorporate those successful methods and combine them with new and innovative ways that work for you and what you hope to accomplish.

Beauty and make-up trade shows are a great way to scope out the competition and see what's happening in the industry as well as market yourself and network with others in the industry.

Opportunities can range from not only Beauty shows but Bridal and Cosplay shows as well.  Cosplay is a whole new area that make-up artists are really starting to become a part of. Getting your foot in the door of a new trend like Cosplay can put you at the top of the list for several clients. These shows are ever changing and can be found in virtually every city.

But Bridal Expos and Cosplay shows are only one avenue.  There are endless opportunities to get your name out there and start networking with fellow artists, producers, performers, designers, and more at the trade shows and expos happening all over the country

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT

Nancy Mendoza

Upon graduating from Orlando's, Joe Blasco Make-up Artist Training Center in September 2010, Nancy Mendoza hit the ground running.

Since the completion of her program she has worked on such projects as Rock of Ages, starring Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta Jones, ABC's brief series Charlie's Angels, and USA's Burn Notice television series.

On the set of  Charlie's Angels , Mendoza served as the make-up third on set.  This meant she worked with the villains and guest stars and even got to do Bosley's (Ramon Rodriguez) make-up for a few episodes.

Everyday she learned something new.  Her department head, Judy Lovell (The Mentalist, The Vampire Diaries), was an amazing teacher and mentor.  One particular technique she picked up from Lovell was being able to make people look like they were crying by using cherry chapstick.

Mendoza even got to apply a Tinsley Transfer tattoo on one of the villains for an entire episode.  She said it was a huge challenge dealing with extremely hot temperatures and water.  The villain had a fight scene which involved him jumping into the water so she had to re-touch his tattoo time and time again.  After about two days of using an alcohol activated tattoo palette to re-draw the giant spider web, Lovell introduced Mendoza to the tattoo ink pen which saved, not only her time, but her sanity as well.

Meeting all of those people on the sets of  Charlie's Angels  and  Rock of Ages  led her to eventually land a job on the set of  Burn Notice .  She was called in to work the last two episodes of Season 5.  "It was such an honor to be asked to work for such a great show."  On the season finale, Mendoza had the privilege of working with Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman).

Mendoza attributes a lot of her success to the instruction she received at Joe Blasco Make-up Artist Training Center.  It was those instructors who helped prepare her for everything she has faced since entering the television and film world.  Special thanks go out to all of her teachers for being so instrumental in helping her find jobs right out of school, "Thank you for preparing me so extensively for the real world."
